Worship, Music, and Communion at Trinity

Coming together for worship on Sunday mornings is the center of our congregational life. Sunday worship begins at 9:30 a.m. and is followed by a fellowship period with refreshments, then Sunday School for all ages from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The Infant Nursery and the Toddler Nursery are available during the worship service, fellowship time, and Sunday School for those families that choose to use them. Children are included in God’s family and they are welcome in the worship service at Trinity. The pastor or another leader invites the children to the front for a part called “We Share Our Faith with Our Children”. Afterwards, children ages 3 ½ – 6 may leave the sanctuary worship to attend a special “Children’s Church” in the fellowship hall.

By design, worshipers at Trinity Presbyterian Church do not gather in a building with steeple, pews, pipe organ, or stained glass windows. Instead, worshipers enjoy comfortable chairs and accompaniment by piano or electronic keyboard. Clear windows let in light and beautiful views of the woods surrounding the church. One has the feeling of being away at a spiritual retreat. The sanctuary is a multipurpose room that can be quickly rearranged for other uses. Yet, the sanctuary is very much a sacred space, where participants regularly sense the holy presence of God. Burdens are shared. Spirits are lifted. Joy is rekindled. The gifts of God are embraced.

Trinity’s worship services embrace variety. The worship service does not always follow the same order. Sermons do not all fit the same style or pattern. Musical instruments from hand bells to guitars to harmonicas to bagpipes are utilized. We sing traditional hymns, psalms, spirituals, folk songs, children’s songs, new words to old hymn tunes, contemporary hymns, and praise music. Trinity’s small, joyful and melodious choir provides music that complements the sermon message and fills the hearts of the congregation. The choir’s musical offering is sometimes replaced by the special music of individuals or groups built from Trinity’s talent pool. Many volunteers participate in the musical worship of Trinity.

Communion is also varied. Sometimes the elders serve the people at their seats by passing trays with the bread, wine, and grape juice. At other times the people come to the front to receive Communion by intinction which involves dipping a piece of bread into grape juice in a shared cup. The Lord’s Supper is usually celebrated on the first Sunday of each month, as well as Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve.

During the course of a year, a number of special services may be held in the sanctuary, the outdoor worship area, or the fellowship hall, such as:

  • Mid-week Lenten worship services and study activities
  • Youth Sunday
  • Scout Sunday
  • Men of the Church Sunday
  • Children’s Sunday
  • Earth Sunday
  • Living Waters for the World Sunday for our clean water projects in El Salvador
  • “Kirkin’ O’ the Tartans” for Scottish heritage

Worship at Trinity seeks to express the full range of our relationship with God. We worship with awe for acceptance, gratitude for forgiveness, wonder at unconditional love, hearts tuned to God in prayer, and dedication to serving persons in need who tug on God’s heartstrings. Come, join us!
